Scenic Byways of the Flaming Gorge Region
As with many Scenic areas of the State, these routes offer an adventure mixed with culture and spectacular view sheds. Unlike other Byways we are fortunate to have extreme variations in Culture and Geology concentrated into our small isolated region of the Uinta Mountains. The Town of Manila is a perfect and natural connection to these purely photographic back-roads. You can read more about National Scenic Byways on the Ashley National Forest Service web site or simply feel free to take a ride and see for yourself.
Byways in our backyard:
- Flaming Gorge - Uintas National Scenic Byway ~ Map a Route ~ The Flaming Gorge Uintas Scenic Byway may be accessed at route 191 from the Wyoming/Utah border, across the Flaming Gorge Dam and to the Junction of Highway 44. From here the Byway split with one route heading to Vernal while the other eventually drops into the Lucerne Valley and our great Town of Manila.
- Red Cloud Loop Scenic Byway ~ Map a Route ~ Red Cloud Loop may be accessed from Scenic Byway State Route 191 or from the Northwest portion of Vernal Utah. The majority of the scenic route is non-paved and provides views that range from High Uinta Mountains to Sandstone Canyons.
- Sheep Creek Geological Loop Scenic Byway ~ Map a Route ~ Sheep Creek Geological Loop is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. With the introduction of Big Horn Sheep and Wild Turkeys in recent years, it has become a great place to watch wildlife. The Sheep Creek River is closed to fishing during the Salmon run which makes for a great time to put down the rod and pick up the camera, catching some great shots of the orange hooked-jaw fish in spawn. In late summer the lower portion of the loop is home to the annual Tower Rock Run. The Northern entrance to the loop rises out of the river bottom willows into vast geological variations before climbing deep into the cedars and lodge pole pines.
